Why Sci-Fi is a new on-going review series about science-fiction movies (maybe even some space fantasy that we will just lump in) by Logan. These movies will be ranked on a scale of 1-10 going from Black Hole to Super Stellar. If you have any movies that you would like Logan to review, please comment below!
I find it fitting to kick off the Why Sci-Fi? series with the great-grandaddy of them all!
This George Melies classic is about a professor and five of his friends who depart Terra Firma in the Extra-Terrestrial-Aeronautical-Projectile on an exploratory voyage to the moon.
It is full of some remarkably entertaining images, like the launch of the Extra-Terrestrial-Aeronautical-Projectile, and the expedition’s landing on the moon. It also, suprisingly, has some pretty touching moments too, like the first time that man sees Earth from the moon.
A word on versions, though.
It’s a sad world we live in, where every sci-fi flick must be accompanied by a plethora of special editions, with each new edition differing more and more from the original.
I am pleased to announce that the 2011 restored color edition is fairly enjoyabe to watch! It’s really quite amazing; over 13,000 frames, and each one was hand colored!
I actually prefer the 2011 restoration, as it is a silent film, which is the format in which the film was intended to be viewed.
All in all, I give A Trip to the Moon a 10/10. From its introduction of sci-fi as a legitimate genre to its impact on the film industry as a whole, its value simply cannot be estimated! It contains some wonderfully humorous and entertaining images!
10/10 = Super Stellar!
To close, if you love films at all, you’ll probably find something redeeming about A Trip to the Moon.
